Prepare for the UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination with our CDS Previous Year Papers (PYPs) Test Series and practice actual previous-year CDS questions in an online test format.
At StudyHUB, we believe that solving Previous Year Papers is one of the most important parts of serious CDS preparation. Books and study material help you learn the concepts, but Previous Year Papers help you understand how UPSC actually asks questions in the examination.
That is why we have created this CDS Previous Year Papers Test Series for aspirants who want to practice real CDS examination questions, understand the difficulty level of the paper, improve their speed and accuracy, identify weak areas, and become more confident before appearing for the actual examination.
Our current course is focused on CDS Elementary Mathematics Previous Year Papers and provides a structured collection of previous papers in online test format. The course currently includes 20 test contents, with English and Hindi versions of the listed papers, covering CDS Mathematics papers from 2021 to 2025. The course also comes with 180 days of validity. ([learn.studyhub.net.in](https://learn.studyhub.net.in/products/cds-previous-year-papers-pyps-test-series/))
The CDS Previous Year Papers Test Series is an online practice program designed to help you solve and analyze questions that have appeared in previous UPSC CDS examinations.
Instead of keeping previous-year question papers only as PDFs or books, we provide them in a convenient online test format so that you can attempt them systematically and make PYP practice an important part of your daily or weekly preparation.
Our objective is simple: you study the syllabus, practice the concepts, solve the actual previous-year questions, identify your mistakes, improve your preparation, and then solve the next paper.
This repeated practice can help you understand the examination better and develop the confidence required to face a competitive exam like CDS.

Previous Year Papers show you what UPSC has actually asked, making them one of the most useful resources for understanding the CDS examination.
When you solve PYPs regularly, you can get a better idea of:
A syllabus tells you what to study, but Previous Year Papers help you understand how UPSC tests that syllabus.
Many students spend months studying books, watching lectures and collecting notes but postpone previous-year papers until the very end. We do not recommend this approach.
Previous Year Papers should be integrated into your preparation rather than treated as a last-minute activity.
When you start solving PYPs earlier, you can identify your weak areas while you still have enough time to improve them. You can also understand which topics deserve more attention and which areas you are already comfortable with.
For a competitive examination like CDS, this practical feedback is extremely valuable.
You get direct exposure to questions that have appeared in actual CDS examinations. This helps you understand the language, structure and style of questions instead of relying only on assumptions about the examination.
CDS is a time-bound examination, so speed matters. Solving previous-year papers repeatedly helps you become more comfortable with calculations, familiar question patterns and common concepts.
Speed is useful only when it is combined with accuracy. PYP practice helps you identify calculation mistakes, conceptual mistakes and careless errors so that you can work on them before the real examination.
Your performance in previous-year papers can clearly show which topics require additional preparation.
For example, you may perform well in Arithmetic but struggle with Geometry or Trigonometry. Once you identify that weakness, you can return to the relevant topic, revise it and practice again.
Previous-year questions give you a practical understanding of the difficulty level of CDS Mathematics. This can help you avoid both under-preparation and unnecessary over-preparation.
Familiarity reduces uncertainty. When you have already solved multiple actual CDS papers, the question format and examination style become much more familiar.
Regular full-paper practice teaches you how to distribute your available time across questions. This is especially important when some questions require more calculation or thinking than others.
The CDS written examination consists of objective-type question papers, and the subjects depend on the academy for which the candidate is applying.
Under the current UPSC CDS examination scheme, candidates appearing for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA) have three papers: English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. Each paper carries 100 marks and has a duration of 2 hours.
For the Officers' Training Academy (OTA), the written examination consists of English and General Knowledge, with each paper carrying 100 marks and a duration of 2 hours.
| Academy | Subjects | Total Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMA | English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics | 300 | 6 Hours |
| INA | English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics | 300 | 6 Hours |
| AFA | English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics | 300 | 6 Hours |
| OTA | English + General Knowledge | 200 | 4 Hours |
All papers are objective type. UPSC specifies that the General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics papers are set bilingually in Hindi and English.
Elementary Mathematics is a 100-mark paper with a duration of 2 hours for candidates appearing for IMA, INA and AFA. UPSC prescribes the standard of the Elementary Mathematics paper at approximately the Matriculation level.
The paper is objective in nature, which means that your preparation must focus not only on understanding formulas and concepts but also on solving questions accurately within the available time.
The CDS Elementary Mathematics syllabus covers the fundamental mathematical concepts required for the written examination.
The major areas include:
Arithmetic includes topics such as number systems, fundamental operations, square roots, decimal fractions, unitary method, time and distance, time and work, percentages, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion and variation.
Algebra includes factors, remainder theorem, HCF and LCM, polynomials, quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, rational expressions and laws of indices.
Trigonometry includes trigonometric ratios, standard values, simple identities, trigonometric tables and heights and distances.
Geometry covers lines and angles, triangles, congruency, similarity, parallelograms, rectangles, squares, circles, tangents, normals and related geometrical concepts.
Mensuration deals with areas, surface areas and volumes, while Statistics includes collection and tabulation of data, graphical representation and measures of central tendency.
Simply opening a previous paper and checking the answers is not enough. You should use every PYP as a complete practice exercise.
Your goal should not be simply to finish all the papers. Your goal should be to become better after every paper.
Previous Year Papers are most useful when you understand the concept behind the question.
Suppose a previous paper contains a percentage-based question. Do not simply memorize its answer. Understand the percentage concept so that you can solve a different question based on the same concept.
The same approach should be followed for Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Arithmetic, Mensuration and every other topic.
Learn the concept, understand the method, identify the pattern and then practice.
Beginners can use Previous Year Papers as a guide to understand what their preparation should look like.
After learning the basic concepts of a topic, attempt questions from previous CDS papers related to that topic. This helps you understand whether your theoretical preparation is sufficient for solving examination-level questions.
Once you complete a significant portion of the syllabus, start attempting complete papers under a time limit.
For repeat candidates, Previous Year Papers can be used as a diagnostic tool.
Instead of simply repeating the same preparation strategy, analyze where you are losing marks. Check whether your problem is lack of conceptual knowledge, insufficient practice, slow calculations, poor question selection or careless mistakes.
Use your previous-year-paper performance to make your preparation more targeted.
Both PYPs and mock tests are useful, but they serve different purposes.
| Previous Year Papers | Mock Tests |
|---|---|
| Questions asked in actual previous examinations | Newly created practice questions |
| Help understand UPSC's real question style | Provide additional practice |
| Useful for analyzing historical question trends | Useful for increasing question exposure |
| Help understand actual difficulty level | Help simulate additional examination situations |
| Excellent for real-paper practice | Excellent for extra practice and performance testing |
Our recommendation is to use Previous Year Papers as a core part of your preparation and supplement them with mock tests and topic-wise practice.
CDS objective papers have negative marking for incorrect answers. Under the current UPSC examination scheme, one-third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect answer. There is no penalty for leaving a question unanswered.
This makes accuracy extremely important. You should not develop a habit of answering every question randomly. Practice should help you learn when to attempt a question, when to spend additional time and when to move on.
Repeated practice helps you develop better judgment about question selection.
During your preparation, try to separate questions into three categories:
This habit can help you create a smarter attempt strategy for the actual CDS examination.
| Feature | How It Helps |
|---|---|
| Previous Year Papers | Understand actual UPSC questions |
| Online Test Format | Practice in an organized manner |
| English & Hindi | Convenient practice for students using either language |
| 2021–2025 Papers | Practice multiple recent examination papers |
| Mathematics PYPs | Focused CDS Elementary Mathematics practice |
| 180-Day Validity | Enough time for repeated practice and revision |
| Performance-Based Practice | Helps identify speed, accuracy and weak areas |
We recommend following a simple preparation cycle instead of studying without measuring your performance.
Know the topics included in CDS Elementary Mathematics and divide your preparation accordingly.
Study the concepts and formulas required for each topic.
Solve topic-wise questions to strengthen your understanding.
Attempt the actual CDS Mathematics papers included in our PYP Test Series.
Identify where you lost marks and why.
Return to the relevant concepts and improve your preparation.
Continue solving papers until your speed, accuracy and confidence improve.
This course is suitable for CDS aspirants who want dedicated practice with previous-year Elementary Mathematics papers.
At StudyHUB, our focus is to make competitive-exam preparation more practical and test-oriented.
We know that students often collect multiple books, PDFs and study resources but do not get enough structured practice. Our aim with this course is to make CDS Previous Year Paper practice simple, organized and accessible online.
Instead of searching for different papers every time, you can access the available previous-year tests from one dedicated course and use them repeatedly throughout your preparation.
Our current course includes 20 test contents, CDS Elementary Mathematics previous-year papers, English and Hindi versions, papers from 2021 to 2025, and 180 days of validity. ([learn.studyhub.net.in](https://learn.studyhub.net.in/products/cds-previous-year-papers-pyps-test-series/))
Consistency is more important than completing the entire course in a single sitting.
Set a fixed PYP practice schedule. Attempt one paper seriously, analyze your mistakes, revise the relevant topics and then move to the next paper.
Maintain a personal record of:
When you compare your performance across multiple papers, you can clearly see whether your preparation is improving.
CDS preparation becomes much more effective when you combine learning with actual examination practice.
Do not wait until the final days before solving Previous Year Papers. Start using them as soon as you have developed a reasonable understanding of the syllabus.
Every previous-year paper should answer an important question for you: “How prepared am I to solve actual UPSC CDS questions under time pressure?”
Use our CDS Previous Year Papers (PYPs) Test Series to practice real CDS Elementary Mathematics papers, understand the UPSC question pattern, improve your speed and accuracy, identify weak areas and build confidence through regular practice.
